June 13: Are Animals People?

What Determines Whether or Not Something Is a "Person"?

Abstract: In this post we will be discussing what criteria constitutes one as a "Person" and if they do not meet ALL parts of the criteria does it mean they are not a person?

Today in class we were given a list of characteristics that define "personhood" which essentially means whether or not they are a person and if so, they should have these qualities. Below we see a picture of said list.

Yet, although we were given this list that supposedly defines what a person is and should be I don't think that is what should qualify whether or not something is a person.

Being vs. Moral Respect

Although one could be a human which we classify as a person that does not mean it deserves the attitude we give towards "people" likewise although one could be non-human that does not mean we should give it 0 moral respect. Like many rules within science and study there are exceptions. Just as sociopaths and psychopaths do not hold emotionality or moral agency, we as humans still consider them people which breaks or rather goes against the idea that a person must follow all characteristics of personhood to be a person. Thus, by that same logic shouldn't it be that animals are humans too? Many animals are proven to be intelligent creatures who behave just as humans do and thus if they follow all characteristics of personhood should they not be considered people as well? If it is only these rules that that define whether or not one is a person then it is clear to see that animals are more "personlike" than even some humans that do not possess all these traits. But as I do consider humans and animals who do not hold all these traits still people, I believe there is another way to classify one as a person. So as my final conclusion I do see animals as people, but even though they follow all the criteria needed to be classified as a person I do not believe those that do not follow all the criteria should be classified as "non-people".
